The hollow ends allow you to place your fingers into the ends for a better grip when covering your tall cakes with fondant using the draping and panelling methods. Having no handles with ball-bearings means that the pin wont roll / unroll until you are ready for it, and the flat ends allow you to flip the pin 90 degrees and rest one end on your cake board as you unravel the fondant around your cake.
